In Madrid, especially in summer, the nights are exceptionally lively and good-natured. Live music of every possible style, clubs, cafeterias, discotheques, bars and terraces stay open until the early hours of the morning. And when they close, there are always the "after-hours", open until midday.

Malasaña and the area around the Plaza del Dos de Mayo are just a couple of the main areas for wilder nightlife in Madrid. Argüelles and Moncloa are the areas chosen by students, while the Paseo de la Castellana and surrounding streets are the location for many of the most fashionable bars and clubs.

Here are just a few suggestions:
Cats
Calle Julián Romea, 4. Large discotheque and a meeting place for many different types of people, although there is a bit of a student atmosphere. High prices and very late opening, specially at the weekend.
Clamores
Calle Alburquerque, 14. One of the temples of Jazz in Madrid. Organizes concerts, also including performances by salsa bands and Cuban musicians.
Cock
Calle Reina, 16. Just behind the mythical Chicote. Intellectual atmosphere and good cocktails. Open the curtains in the entrance to find yourself in a high-ceiling hall studded with chairs and tables. At the weekend, it's almost impossible to get in due to overcrowding.
El Botas
Calle Fe, 9. One of the historical spots in the Lavapiés and La Latina area. Old rockers treat the bar as one of the few of their temples that still remain in Madrid, dedicated to Rock and Roll.
El Capote
Calle Santa Teresa, 3. In spite of a location in an area which has been taken over by the young, El Capote is one of the fixtures of Madrid nightlife opening until late and featuring an entrance policy where you will have to knock on the door and wait to be let in. Good music and a curious bunch of visitors elbow to elbow at the bar.
El Son
Calle Fernando VI, 21. Small, stylish café serving dozens of types of rum and filled with calm conversation. The haunt of writers, journalists and artists forming a peculiar "clan".
El Templo del Gato.
Calle Jardines, 3. Rock of all ages over two floors. There is also a pool room. One of the all-time classics in Madrid.
Gabana
Calle Velázquez, 6. Since this place opened a couple of years ago in Madrid, everybody seems to want to have a drink there. Difficult, however, if you're not famous or beautiful or don't drive a stunning sports car. A lot of pseudo-glamour, a few half-famous people and too many bottle blondes.
Galileo Galilei
Calle Galileo, 100. The stage here has seen a lot of the city's most famous singers and comedians, probably the most popular being the duo Faemino and Cansado. It's also a great place just to have a drink or a small snack.
Honky Tonk
Calle Covarrubias, 24. A member of the old pop group Mermelada opened this bar a few years ago, halfway between a pub and a concert hall. Two floors normally packed with people, especially at the weekend.
Joy Eslava
Calle Arenal, 11. One of the classics and survivor of so many fashion trends. Beautiful people and a doorman it's hard to get past at the weekend. Inside there is a theater-style layout where there are also regular presentations and concerts. The place chosen by many for the last drink during the week.
Kapital
Calle Atocha, 135. The biggest discotheque in Madrid spread over seven floors, each with a different musical style. Dance floors full of every different type of person you could imagine.
Matador
Calle La Cruz, 39. A bar that combines tapas by day and drinks at night. Flamenco music and decoration based on farming tools and "typically Spanish" artifacts with a post-modern touch.
Morocco
Marqués de Leganés, 7. Modern but dark and a little claustrophobic. Organizes concerts and closes at dawn at the weekend.
Pachá
Calle Barceló, 11. One of the most long-lasting discotheques in Madrid, forever related to the "beautiful people". Afternoon sessions for the very young. Also concerts, CD presentations and many events attended by the "rich and famous". Closes at 5.30 am. at the weekends.
Palacio de Gaviria
Calle Arenal, 9. The first floor is home to what was once a French-style Palace. Nowadays, amongst the paintings and curtains several bars serve drinks, there are ballroom dancing classes and pool tables.
Suristán
Calle Cruz, 7. The location for ethnic music from every corner of the planet. Concerts almost every night. A large location decorated with good taste.
Vaivén
Travesía de San Mateo, 1. Ideal for dancing to salsa and merengue. A very large bar with two bars but full at weekends.
Many of these bars have their own terraces in summer. Apart from these, there are also a number of places that have become classics of Madrid evenings in the summer and should not be missed:
Terraza Bolero
Paseo de la Castellana, 33. The most outstanding terrace on the Castellana. If you're wandering around the terraces on the Paseo de la Castellana, you can't miss a visit to the Bolero. One of the most popular summer venues. Legendary for funky fiestas and beautiful people.
Terraza Boulevard
Castellana, 37. The oldest of the terraces on the Castellana. Owned by the Sastre brothers, it is one of Madrid's most historical bars. An obligatory stop if you're looking for a terrace with a certain category and prestige. Very beautiful people.
Terraza Centro Comercial ABC Serrano
Serrano 61. A terrace with a view, on the fourth floor of the Centro Comercial Abc Serrano, and a venue for the better off. A nice location with excellent views.
Terraza Down
Serrano 14. Downstairs at Serrano 41. A select clientele, fans of dance and the latest fashions and all under 25.
Terraza Gula Gula
Marqués de Casa Riera, 2. The wildest terrace. At night, the terrace at the Círculo de Bellas Artes becomes the Terraza Gula Gula. Dance music, glamour and a lot of action. Guaranteed atmosphere for the kings and queens of the night.
Terraza la Vieja Estación
Avda Ciudad de Barcelona, s/n. The hottest and most bohemian terrace in Madrid. Property of the Grupo Kapital, featuring chill-out, restaurant and karaoke amongst other things. Modern and bohemian in the area around Atocha Station. Salsa and Caribbean rhythms to the south of the Castellana. Personalities such as Coto Matamoros, Jorge Salatti or Rafael Amargo feature at some of the eight bars offered by the venue.
Fortuny
Fortuny 34. Exquisite food at midday, drinks by night. This famous restaurant has opened up two floors for evening drinkers. A select atmosphere, with strict doormen, but normally full nevertheless. They often organize evening parties and also have a valet parking service.
